Police plan stops to check for DWI

Section: Community

Staff Reports

Police plan to block roads and check motorists for sobriety in four locations over the next four days.

The schedule is:

-- St. Bernard Parish: Today at 6 p.m. through Friday at 6 a.m.

-- Kenner: Friday from 7 p.m. to midnight.

-- St. Tammany Parish: Friday from 10 p.m. to Saturday at 4 a.m.

-- St. Charles Parish: Sunday from 6 p.m. to Monday at 6 a.m.

Authorities will be seeking drivers under the influence of alcohol or drugs. They announce the times and general locations of these checkpoints in advance but are not required to pinpoint the sites.

Kenner police are conducting the Kenner operation. State Police are running the other checkpoints, sometimes in conjunction with local authorities.

State Police said sobriety checkpoints are an effective enforcement tool that deters impaired driving.
