Councilmember, City’s Recovery Chief to Lead Saturday Bike Ride Along

St. Claude Avenue

NEW ORLEANS, LA– Dr. Edward Blakely, Executive Director of the Office of Recovery Management and Development Administration, and District C Councilmember James Carter will co-host a community bike ride through the city’s Bunnyfriend neighborhood at 10:30 a.m., on Saturday, March 29.

Saturday’s bike ride will be the continuation of a citywide community effort to garner continued civic participation in the rebuilding and recovery process. The tour of the Bunnyfriend neighborhood will take citizens through a range of residential and burgeoning commercial properties in the St. Claude area.

“The Bunnyfriend neighborhood is rich in diversity and history. We continue to urge neighborhood residents to join us as we invest city resources toward the redevelopment of this neighborhood, particularly its promising commercial corridor,” said Dr. Blakely. “Moreover, this neighborhood will benefit enormously from the development of existing economic assets and rebuilding opportunities in the adjacent recovery target zone.”

This is Dr. Blakely’s second bike tour in Council District C. In September, he and Councilmember James Carter hosted a bike tour in the Algiers community.

“This ride is a great opportunity for the citizens of District C to meet with Dr. Blakely and myself and to provide their input on the continued revitalization of our community,” said Councilmember Carter.

The bike ride will begin at the Daily Walking with Christ Church at 3621 St. Claude Avenue. Nestled in between the St. Roch and Desire neighborhoods, the St. Claude neighborhood is strategically located in and around major commercial sites prime for revitalization.

“It is our responsibility to work with the citizens in unlocking and exploring the potential within this neighborhood,” said Dr. Blakely.

Dr. Blakely’s Bike Rides provide city and community residents and leaders with an in-the-field perspective of the rebuilding needs and activities existent throughout the city’s neighborhoods. The rides also expose citizens to areas of the city not familiar to them, thereby encouraging a greater understanding of the rebuilding process.

The route for Saturday’s ride is as follows:

Start at Daily Walking with Christ Church, 3621 St. Claude Ave.
Proceed down St. Claude to Desire Street.
Turn right at Desire Street followed by another right onto North Derbigny
Participants will turn right at Bartholomew Street. and proceed back to church at 3621 St. Claude Ave.

This civic event is open to the public. Citizens are encouraged to take the proper safety precautions if participating in the bike ride.
