1st Blighted Property Sale

NEW ORLEANS (9/18/08) - Orleans Parish Civil Sheriff Paul R. Valteau Jr. announces that the first property to be auctioned under the recently enacted state statute Act 115 will be held this Thursday, September 18 at noon in the lobby of the Civil District Courthouse located at 421 Loyola Avenue.
In 2007 the state legislature passed HB 796 which allows the city of New Orleans to obtain a money judgment against an owner of blighted property which includes a seizure so it can be sold at public auction. Typically in Louisiana, a municipality can only pursue actions against the real estate in the form of a tax sale instead of an action against the owner of the real estate. Unlike a tax sale which includes a "right of redemption" , these sales have no such right.

The property to be auctioned is a vacant corner lot located in Council District B at the corner of Soraparu (645) and Chippewa (2343). The opening bid will be 2/3 of the appraised value of $45,000 and will not include any rights of redemption.
