A St. Charles Parish judge found probable cause on Monday to hold a New Sarpy woman on first-degree murder. She is charged in connection with the death of her newborn baby last week. Belinda Wells, 24, told sheriff's deputies that she gave birth to the baby and buried it near a dog pen it in the back yard of her family's home. The baby's body, which was mutilated, most likely by the family dog. The baby's body was found by her boyfriend, who called police. He was questioned and later released. Judge Emile St. Pierre of 29th Judicial District Court found probable cause for the charge against Wells and ordered her held without bond, said Regina Cyrus, a spokeswoman for District Attorney Harry Morel Jr.

What happens next depends on whether Wells is indicted by a grand jury, which by law must consider all first-degree and second-degree murder charges, Cyrus said. An arraignment, when Wells would be allowed to plead guilty or not guilty, is set for March 13, but the date could be changed, depending on the grand jury's schedule, Cyrus said.
