Mitch Landrieu on Rebuilding

Section: Politics

Press office of Lieutenant Governor

On July 22, 2008, Lt. Governor Mitch Landrieu spoke to the National Press Club in Washington, D.C. Landrieu addressed the need for a strong and sustained federal commitment to rebuilding New Orleans and the Gulf Coast. This issue is particularly meaningful as America prepares to elect a new President.

"If we can help lift New Orleans off her knees, we can lift America along with her," said Landrieu. "We are in tough times. But America has always found her greatness when called forth to respond to great tragedies. We have done so before. We must do it again."

As communities rebuild, Landrieu said that Louisiana can serve as a test lab to find new ways of solving old problems. Louisiana can become America's "laboratory for democracy," creating a model for community renewal that can be replicated across the country.
