Very important elections will soon be upon us. The Democratic Party is conducting its Party primary on Saturday, October 4. The Democratic Party will hold a runoff election, if necessary, on Tuesday, November 4 - the same day that citizens of this nation will elect a new President of the United States. The general election for the Second Congressional District will take place on Saturday, December 6.

Please be sure to exercise your precious right to choose your elected representatives. In addition, please vote to re-elect Congressman William Jefferson who has for nearly two decades successfully represented and served well the people of Louisiana's Second Congressional District and this region.

The Elections ... and Voter Registration


Saturday, October 4th - Democratic Party Primary. (The deadline to register to vote in this Democratic Party first primary election has passed - 9/03/2008. )

Tuesday, November 4th - Democratic Party Run-Off election, if necessary. (The deadline to register to vote in this Democratic Party Runoff Election is Monday, October 6th.)

(* On Tuesday, November 4, voters will also elect the new President of the United States! Congressman Jefferson recently cast his vote for presidential candidate Senator Barack Obama, the Democratic Party nominee, while serving as a Super Delegate at the Democratic Party National Convention in Denver)

Saturday, December 6 - Second Congressional District general election. (The deadline to register to vote is Wednesday, November 5. )

Early Voting:

- for the October 4th election - early voting takes place this Saturday, September 20 through Saturday, September 27
- for the November 4th general election, early voting is Saturday, October 21 through Saturday, October 28

- for the December 6 election, early voting is Saturday, November 22, through Saturday, November 29


Orleans Parish:

To cast an early vote, please visit, in Orleans Parish, the Registrar of Voters, City Hall, 1300 Perdido Street, 1st floor, Suite 1W23. The Registrar's office is open from 8:30 a.m. until 4:30 p.m.

Orleans Parish citizens can also cast early votes at the Algiers Courthouse, 225 Morgan Street, between the hours of 8:30 a.m. and 4:30 p.m.

Jefferson Parish:

Residents of the Westbank of Jefferson Parish can cast early votes at The Jefferson Parish Registrar of Voters, 5001 Westbank Expressway (corner of Barataria), Suite C-2, between the hours of 8:30 a.m. and 4:30 p.m.

Residents of the Eastbank of Jefferson Parish can cast early votes at the Jefferson Parish Registrar of Voters, 1221 Elmwood Park Boulevard, Suite # 501.

Orleans Parish:

To register to vote, please visit, in Orleans Parish, the Registrar of Voters, City Hall, 1300 Perdido Street, 1st floor, Suite 1W23. The Registrar's office is open for voter registration from 8:30 a.m. until 4:30 p.m., Monday thru Friday. Phone: 504-658-1300.

Citizens can also register to vote by completing the application that is found online at www.sos.louisiana.gov. The completed application can be mailed.

(FYI - Voting in the 2008 Statewide Congressional District Elections: Act 560 of the 2006 Legislative Session (18:1275.1-1279) created the closed party primary system for Congress only - U. S. Senators and U. S. Representatives. )
