Prayer for students

The Rev. Dennis Hayes, pastor of St. Louise de Marillac in Chalmette, who was temporarily assigned to Our Lady of Divine Providence Parish in Metairie after Hurricane Katrina recently provided the invocation at Green Park Elementary School's annual awards ceremony.

The Rev. Hayes spoke the following words of encouragement to the students: "Dear God, like the Mississippi River - mighty and muddy -- may these students use all their might to keep studying hard even when things seem muddy!

"Like the bald cypress tree, tall, with deep roots, may these students keep growing taller and taller, by being rooted in the basics of reading, writing and arithmetic.

"Like the brown pelican -- who feeds her young with her own blood - may these students honor their mothers and fathers, whose blood runs through their veins.

"Like the Catahoula dog -- always loyal and by your side -- may these students be true friends, not just to each other, but to those without friends.

"Like the fleur de lis, the flower of the lily, may students always be the blossoms, the flowers, of their teachers' eyes.

"And, like the colored pencils children use to do their coloring, may each student be a living colored pencil, no two alike, each a different shade, that you, dear God, hold in your hand to color the world."
